Sustainable educational tourism and the acculturation of international students from the Global South

PurposeThe aim of this study is to understand the acculturation experiences of international students in order to maximize their academic and social experiences which, in turn, can facilitate the development of sustainable educational tourism in the host country.Design/methodology/approachUsing a qualitative methodology and semi-structured interview techniques, 40 international postgraduate tourism students from the Global South were interviewed.FindingsThe findings in this study demonstrated that the main problems faced by these students are inadequate funds and language difficulties.Originality/valueThis study highlighted the fact that although the number of international students is growing all over the world, for most of the students from poorer parts of the world, being an international student is fraught with difficulties. It also demonstrated that although acculturation stress is a serious concern, lack of adequate funding assumes greater importance for students from a poor background.

Acculturation of international students in a non–first-tier city in China

Although there have been abundant studies on the acculturation of immigrants in developed countries, such as Russia and the United States, research on acculturation in China has been relatively rare and mainly focuses on migrant workers in metropolitan cities. This study conducted a six-month investigation of the acculturation of 133 international students in Wuhan, a non–first-tier city and the largest city in central China, using questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. Moreover, this study explored six major factors in the acculturation process, including ethnic identity, perceived attitude, social support, social interaction, daily communication, and future plans. It was found that most of the international students in Wuhan could acculturate well, tended to adopt an integration strategy in their acculturation process, and all the factors under investigation, except social interaction, exerted significant influence in the process. Different measures have been proposed to facilitate the acculturation process of international students in China. This study aimed to provide a reference for future research on international students’ acculturation strategies and results and to formulate relevant policies in facilitating the acculturation process in some universities.

Impact of Community Engagement on Students’ College Experience

Past research has shown student engagement with the college community provides a valuable experience during the student’s college career. Community engagement not only helps make college life a more pleasant one, but could potentially help develop a more well-rounded individual. This study aims to explore the issue of engaging college students with the local community, with a focus on simple approaches to helping make stronger connections between the two sides. We adopt a real-life case study approach to explore students’ experiences after they are introduced to some unique aspects of the community. Two programs, one on local business history and the other on current local businesses, were designed to familiarize students, especially new college students, with the community. The results of the study have implications for student engagement programs, acculturation of international students, students’ learning experiences, and students’ professional growth.

Betwixt and between: a qualitative review of the (Re)acculturation of international students and returnees

ABSTRACT Pre-pandemic, the international education marketplace was expanding rapidly along with cross-border educational mobilities. Researchers have explored the adaptions of international students to study destinations, notably within an acculturation framework. However, researchers have given less attention to adapting to life in the country of origin that international students encounter as returnees. It is commonplace for returning graduates to transition from higher education to employment. Despite such challenges, few studies have investigated how international students reintegrate into the job markets of their home countries. In this paper, we discuss the current state of relevant research on acculturation and reacculturation and provide a foundation for future research. Finally, theoretical and practical contributions in the field of counselling and guidance are provided.

Dietary acculturation of international students in Pune, India: a cross-sectional study.

Dietary acculturation refers to how a migrant group adopts the eating patterns of the host country. It results in changes in dietary behavior, dietary intake, and nutritional status of this vulnerable group. To study dietary acculturation of international students in Pune, India. International students from three Universities in Pune were enrolled. Information on demography, dietary behavior, and dietary intake (using a food frequency questionnaire) was recorded using an interviewer-administered questionnaire. The height and weight of the students were measured using standard, calibrated equipment. The data were analyzed using descriptive and analytical statistics. A total of 100 international students from Iran, Africa, and South Korea were grouped by nationality. Considerable variation was detected in the daily number of meals consumed, skipping meals, portion size changes, packaged food consumption, and supplement intake following migration between the groups. The intake of non-vegetarian food had declined drastically for all groups. However, the specific non-vegetarian item showing the greatest change differed according to the group's nationality. The intake of biscuits and cake had increased among all groups. African students showed an increase of 3.33 kg in body weight following migration. The intake of protein and micronutrients declined for all groups. This study highlights the changes in dietary behavior, dietary intake, and nutritional status of international students of different nationalities following migration to Pune, India. Thus, it emphasizes the need for nutrition interventions in international students in India.

Knowledge, Attitude and Practices (KAP) towards Diet and Health among International Students in Dublin: A Cross-Sectional Study.

International students may have difficulties in dietary acculturation. This study aimed to evaluate the knowledge, attitude and practices (KAP) of diet and health during the acculturation of international students. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among a convenience sample of 473 international students in Dublin. Knowledge, attitude and practices towards diet and health were evaluated by a questionnaire with open- and closed-ended questions. It was found that 45.3% of participants had a broad concept of a healthy diet, while few knew its specific contents. Furthermore, 75.3% of participants could explain the term functional food, and among them, 62.1% knew the appropriate definition of functional food. Participants who perceived their health very good and excellent were more likely to believe that their health status was determined by their own control. The consumption rate of functional food varied among regions and South and Central America students had the highest usage rate (44.5%) and Asian students had the highest daily usage rate (52.7%). Participants who were younger, single, from African and South and Central American countries, or who were in Ireland for less than one year were more likely to report dietary change after immigration. In conclusion, insufficient knowledge and self-perception towards diet and health as well as unhealthily dietary changes exist among international students living in Dublin.

Helping the Transition: Mentorship to Support International Students in Canada

We developed a program that paired newcomer international students with Canadian student mentors. These pairs met weekly throughout a semester and international student participants completed measures at both the beginning and end of the program. We found that program participants experienced positive changes in sociocultural and psychological adaptation, and a reduction in acculturative stress over time. At the conclusion of the program, program participants also showed higher levels of psychological adaptation and lower levels of acculturative stress than control participants, who had not participated in the program. These findings make an important contribution to the empirical literature on the acculturation of international students and provide foundations for future research.

A Group Psychological Intervention to Enhance the Coping and Acculturation of International Students

Role of Social Support, Hardiness, and Acculturation as Predictors of Mental Health among International Students of Asian Indian Origin

This study determined the role of social support, hardiness, and acculturation as predictors of mental health among international Asian Indian students enrolled at two large public universities in Ohio. A sample of 185 students completed a 75-item online instrument assessing their social support levels, acculturation, hardiness, and their mental health. Regression analyses were conducted to test for variance in mental health attributable to each of the three independent variables. The final regression model revealed that the belonging aspect of social support, acculturation and prejudice of acculturation scale, and commitment and control of hardiness were all predictive of mental health (R2 = 0.523). Recommendations have been offered to develop interventions that will help strengthen the social support, hardiness, and acculturation of international students and help improve their mental health. Recommendations for development of future Web-based studies also are offered.
